Arctic weather alert: Orange warnings as snow and ice grip Ireland

Ireland is bracing for severe winter conditions as Met Éireann issues Status Orange warnings for multiple counties, with heavy snow, ice, and rain expected to cause significant disruption across the country.

Counties Cork, Kerry, and Waterford face a double warning – both Status Orange and Yellow – with heavy rain turning to sleet and snow from 5pm today until 5pm tomorrow. Meanwhile, a separate Status Orange snow-ice warning has been issued for Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Wicklow, Limerick, Clare, and Tipperary.

Taoiseach Simon Harris warned that this weather event is particularly challenging as the cold conditions will persist well into next week, with temperatures expected to plummet to -7C in some areas overnight. “A particular challenge with this weather event is that it will remain very cold for most of next week so it will take time for snow, ice etc to thaw,” he said.

According to The Journal, the remaining counties are under Status Yellow warnings for snow and ice, including all of Northern Ireland. Met Éireann warns of very difficult traveling conditions, poor visibility, public transport disruptions, and potential animal welfare issues.

Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue has urged farmers to prioritize safety during the cold spell, emphasizing the importance of ensuring livestock have access to adequate feed, shelter, and fresh water during freezing conditions.

Motorists are advised to take extra precautions, including checking tire treads, ensuring all lights are working, and carrying emergency equipment. The RSA recommends maintaining safe speeds and distances, and allocating extra journey time during these hazardous conditions.

Local authorities and road agencies have implemented gritting plans, and arrangements are in place to support rough sleepers during the cold snap. Officials advise the public to stay updated with weather warnings and follow safety guidance.
