COVID-19 outbreaks persist in Irish nursing homes and hospitals

1,500 hospitalized in October as XFG variant dominates, though overall case numbers decline from summer peak

Nursing homes and hospitals across Ireland continue battling COVID-19 outbreaks, with approximately 1,500 people hospitalized during October, according to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC).

While cases have declined sharply from summer levels—dropping from 600 weekly cases to 221 last week—the virus maintains a persistent presence, particularly affecting vulnerable populations in care settings.

Demographics and Severity

People aged 65 and over remain most affected, followed by the 45-64 age group, with some cases among 15-24 year-olds. ICU admissions remain low, and deaths are limited to single digits weekly. October recorded 10 deaths in week 40, with three deaths each in weeks 41 and 42. Last week saw 98 hospitalizations from 221 new cases, with no ICU admissions or deaths reported.

Geographic Distribution

Dublin reported the highest case numbers, followed by Cork, Louth, Kildare, Kerry, Limerick, Galway, and Tipperary. Laois recorded the fewest infections.

Variant Trends

The XFG variant accounts for over 83% of cases between weeks 36 and 40, with the NB.1.8.1 variant comprising approximately 14%. The latest Integrated Respiratory Virus Bulletin indicates COVID-19 remains at low to moderate levels at 4.3 cases per 100,000 people. Cases fell 37% from week 42 to week 43, with hospital admissions also decreasing.

Outbreak Statistics

Fifteen outbreaks were reported last week, bringing the total to 91 since October 1. Nursing homes have been disproportionately affected throughout the year, reporting 300 cases by late April before declining to approximately 50 weekly cases currently. Hospitals continue experiencing 25-50 cases weekly.

Public Health Context

The persistent circulation in institutional settings highlights ongoing vulnerability among elderly and medically compromised populations despite overall declining case numbers. Health authorities have not announced new restrictions but typically recommend vaccination boosters for eligible groups, particularly those over 65 and residents of care facilities.

The data suggests Ireland is managing COVID-19 as an endemic respiratory virus rather than an acute crisis, with surveillance systems monitoring variant evolution and institutional outbreak patterns to protect high-risk populations as winter respiratory virus season intensifies.
