Do you leave your car engine running and step out in order to defrost the vehicle? Be careful, this can lead to a fine of €2,000 and imprisonment up to three months.

According to the Regulation 87 of the Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) Regulations, 1963, leaving the vehicle unattended with the engine running on any public road, even in the instance that the public road adjoins a person’s property or driveway.

Such actions can lead to serious vehicle accidents and the gardai have the authority to put a fine on such drivers. If the offense is committed for the first time, a fine of €1,000 can be imposed and for the second time it will be increased to €2,000. If the same offense is repeated within 12 months, a fine of €2,000 and three months of imprisonment ca be expected.

So, let’s not leave the engine running unattended right? Not only to obey law, but also to keep the road safe for others.
