France, the defending FIFA World Cup champions, defeated England 2-1 to advance to the tournament’s final four.
At Al Bayt Stadium, Olivier Giroud’s goal in the 78th minute kept France on course to become the first team to win back-to-back World Cups since Brazil in 1962.
Giroud dashed off in ecstasy as his header sailed past Jordan Pickford’s goal and off England defender Harry Maguire.
Late in the game, England striker Harry Kane had a chance to tie the game, but his penalty attempt went over the crossbar.
It was his second penalty kick of the game. He had earlier equalised the score after Aurelien Tchouameni had given France the lead in the 17th minute with a strong drive from 20 metres (yards).
On Wednesday, France will play Morocco in the semifinals. By defeating Portugal 1-0, the Moroccans became the first African team to advance to the World Cup semifinals.
