Gardai issue warning about fake €2 coins after a seizure in north Dublin.

Following the seizure of nearly 1,500 fake €2 coins, the people are being advised to remain vigilant.

Officers in Raheny, in north Dublin, conducted an investigation into the circulation of the fake coins, said Garda.

As a result, several searches were conducted at the end of the previous month.

These searches resulted in the seizure and discovery of counterfeit €2 coins, which had an apparent face value of €2,920.

Assets worth €73,986 have been frozen in bank accounts, and one person has been accused and brought before the courts.

People are being advised to visit the Central Bank website, for more information on counterfeit currency.

Comparing a fake coin to a recognised genuine one, the following striking features may be visible:

  • Poor quality image detail
  • Different colour ring and/or core
  • Edge lettering missing, incorrect spelling or font (using similar country coin)
  • Different sizes
  • Thickness, diameter
  • Different sized ring or core
  • Different weight
