India’s PV Sindhu wins historic bronze medal in Tokyo; Becomes the only second Indian player to win two medals in Olympics

Once again India’s PV Sindhu bagged a medal in Olympics, beating China’s He Bing Jiao in women’s singles badminton in the bronze medal match. The match for third place in Tokyo Olympics was taken place between the two after Sindhu losing semifinals to Chinese-Taipei’s Tai Tzu-Ying yesterday.

Sindhu, the silver medalist in last Rio Olympics was one of India’s biggest hopes for gold this time. Though she couldn’t make it to the finals, Sindhu became the only second person to win two Olympics medals for India. Earlier Sushil Kumar became the first Indian to win two Olympics medals in 2008 and 2012, winning a bronze and silver respectively.

Even after yesterday’s defeat and disappointment, Sindhu was in full form in the match against He Bing Jiao. She outscored the Chinese player with 21-13, 21-15 authentic victory just within the 53 minutes match. In the history of former 16 matches between the two, Jiao had beaten Sindhu 9 times and had a lead. Given that this winning became more enjoyable to the 26-year-old Sindhu.

With Sindhu’s bronze, India bagged 3 medals in Tokyo so far. Mirabai Chanu had won a silver in Women’s 49 kg Weightlifting and Lovlina Borgohain had assured a medal by qualifying for semi-finals in Women’s Welterweight boxing. Lovlina still holds a chance to win the gold in Tokyo. Her semi-final match against Turkey’s Busenaz Surmeneli is on August 4.
