Ireland Plans High-Powered EV Chargers Every 60km on Motorways

Ireland aims to install high-powered electric vehicle (EV) chargers every 60km along its motorway network, announced Transport Minister Eamon Ryan. The National Road EV Charging Network Plan details this ambition, encompassing high-powered motorway chargers, home and apartment charging, destination charging, and residential neighborhood charging, including new mobility hubs.

Minister Ryan emphasized the plan’s ambitious targets for comprehensive charging coverage on national roads. The recently developed Universal Design Guidelines support the rollout of user-friendly charging infrastructure nationwide. These guidelines, informed by international best practices and stakeholder engagement, position Ireland as a leader in accessible and functional EV charging.

“These measures assure EV drivers that they can find high-powered, fast, and convenient charge points when needed,” said Ryan.

Additionally, the Regional and Local EV Charging Network Plan was unveiled, with a public consultation open until July 19. This plan aims for an accelerated rollout of charging infrastructure in cities, towns, and villages, guided by local authorities to ensure a unified national approach. The final document, influenced by public feedback, will be published in late 2024, aligning with national and European clean transportation goals.
