Leo Varadkar set to replace Micheál Martin as Taoiseach

Following a vote in the Dáil, Leo Varadkar will succeed Micheál Martin as Taoiseach today.

Mr. Martin will submit his resignation to President Michael D. Higgins this morning.

These changes of roles at the top of Government are in keeping with the agreement underpinning the coalition.

The Dáil is expected to vote to nominate Mr. Varadkar as Taoiseach before 1 pm after he is proposed and seconded by Fine Gael TDs Richard Bruton and Emer Higgins.

Mr. Varadkar is anticipated to tell the Dáil that his goal will be to give everyone a fair start, housing, and economic opportunity.

He is likely to say too that the coalition was born in a spirit of togetherness and hope during the pandemic and he intends for that spirit to continue.

The Fine Gael leader will then depart for Arás an Uachtarain at midday, and upon his return, he will start the process of appointing the Cabinet.

No significant personnel changes are anticipated, and it is assumed that Mr. Martin will take over as Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Michael McGrath will become Minister for Finance, with Paschal Donohoe moving to Public Expenditure and Reform.

A new Chief Whip and Attorney General will also be appointed.

Sinn Féin has said there will be no change in policy after today’s Dáil proceedings and a general election is needed, not a rotation in the office of Taoiseach.

In the meantime, the reshuffle-related talks between the leaders of the Government parties are over.

The leaders will probably get in touch again this afternoon, but it is thought that the details have already been agreed upon.

Prior to the ministerial announcements at around 5 o’clock, however, there is no formal meeting scheduled.
