Number of people in homelessness hits record level in Ireland

Charities asked the government to extend the ban on evictions as the number of people living in homeless housing in Ireland increased to a new record high for the seventh consecutive month.

According to the Department of Housing’s most recent statistics, a total of 11,754 people—8,323 adults and 3,431 children—were staying in emergency housing in January.

1,609 families were included in this, with more than half being headed by a single parent.

5 946 adults, or the majority of all homeless persons, resided in Dublin, whereas 529 adults were homeless in Cork.

Focus Ireland examined the data and found that, shockingly, there were 2,604 more homeless persons in January 2023 than there were at the same period in the previous year.

In the past year, family homelessness has increased by 44%, while kid homelessness has increased by 34%.
