Over 90,000 apply for Storm Éowyn compensation as €11.2 million paid out in initial support

More than 90,000 applications have been submitted for compensation following Storm Éowyn, which brought record-breaking gusts of 184km/h in January.

The storm caused around €200 million in damage and left 768,000 electricity customers without power.

According to figures obtained by TG4’s 7LÁ programme, over 92,000 people have registered for the Department of Social Protection’s Humanitarian Assistance Scheme.

So far, more than 45,600 Stage 1 payments—totalling nearly €11.2 million—have been issued to cover immediate hardship, including food and essential needs.

Stage 1 closed on 25 April, but Stages 2 and 3 of the scheme remain open.

Stage 2 covers compensation for damaged household items like appliances and furniture, while Stage 3 supports repair work needed to make homes habitable again, such as plastering and rewiring.
