Penalty points hit half-million mark as hundreds face driving bans

More than half a million drivers across Ireland now have penalty points on their licenses, with hundreds facing automatic six-month driving bans, according to the latest data from the Road Safety Authority.

The monthly report, which provides figures through the end of April 2025, reveals that 512,791 motorists currently have active penalty points on their driving records. Among these, 866 drivers have accumulated the maximum 12 points, triggering automatic six-month driving bans.

The figures highlight the significant scale of traffic enforcement across the country as authorities continue efforts to improve road safety. Under Ireland’s penalty point system, drivers who accumulate 12 points within a three-year period face a mandatory disqualification from driving.

The data comes amid ongoing concerns about road safety in Ireland, with authorities implementing various measures including increased speed camera coverage and enforcement of road traffic regulations. Last week, a new static speed camera was announced for the N80 in County Carlow, adding to the nationwide network of fixed and mobile speed monitoring systems.

The Road Safety Authority continues to monitor driving behavior across the country, with the penalty points system serving as a key tool in identifying and addressing dangerous driving practices before they lead to serious accidents.
