Underlining the severity of the housing crisis in Ireland, a new research has found that population growth has exceeded new homes by a ratio of almost four to one.
According to Savills Ireland, an analysis of population growth in comparison to housing delivery between 2015 and 2023 shows that 3.8 people were added to the population for every one new unit of housing delivered.
On this parameter, Ireland ranked as the worst performing nation and was followed by Spain, which recorded 3.4 new people per one new unit delivered.
Spain was followed by Canada (2.9), UK (2.1), Australia (1.9), Sweden and Netherlands (1.8).
The report pointed out that while immigration has fuelled Ireland’s population growth, the country also has by far the highest natural population growth (births minus deaths) in Europe.
