Róisín Garvey elected Deputy leader of Green Party

Clare-based Senator Róisín Garvey has been elected as the new deputy leader of the Green Party. She narrowly won the election, beating Dublin Central TD Neasa Hourigan by 13 votes.

Ms. Garvey, from West Clare, has a strong background in climate education and community activism. She made history in 2019 as the first woman and first Green Party member elected to Clare County Council for North Clare. She became a senator in May 2020 as a Taoiseach’s nominee to the Seanad.

A total of 917 members registered to vote in the election, and 653 votes were cast. Ms. Garvey received 333 votes, while Deputy Hourigan received 320.

Ms. Garvey replaces Catherine Martin, who has served as deputy leader for the past 13 years. Ms. Martin congratulated Ms. Garvey and expressed her support for Neasa Hourigan, recognizing her as a valuable member of the Green Party.

“It has been a huge honor and a privilege to serve as deputy leader of the Green Party for the last 13 years,” said Ms. Martin. “I look forward to continuing to work as a Green TD and government minister, placing climate and social justice at the heart of everything I do.”

Ms. Garvey will join the party’s new leader, Roderic O’Gorman, in leading the Green Party.
