The Tánaiste and Minister for Defence, Micheál Martin, has confirmed an €8.6 million investment for a new Communications and Information Services (CIS) Workshop at the Defence Forces Training Centre in Curragh Camp. This project, part of the Defence Forces Infrastructure Development Plan (IDP), aims to enhance the infrastructure and facilities for the Defence Forces.
Speaking about the initiative, the Tánaiste emphasized the importance of modernizing the Defence Forces. “Since becoming Minister for Defence, my focus has been the transformation and modernization of the Defence Forces. Improving the quality of the Defence Forces infrastructure and facilities is a key part of this change.”
The state-of-the-art CIS workshop will support the maintenance of essential communications equipment and accommodate large vehicle-based systems, including 18-tonne MOWAG armoured personnel carriers and the next generation of armoured vehicles weighing 25 to 30 tonnes. The facility will also include equipment storage, staff facilities, a dining area, locker rooms, showers, and toilet areas.
Mythen Construction has been awarded the contract for this project, which is part of the €45 million allocation for capital projects in 2024. The overall building programme for the Defence Forces, including maintenance and other projects, totals €56 million for this year.
