India, under the captaincy of Shafali Verma, defeated New Zealand by 8 wickets in Potchefstroom on Friday, advancing to the finals of the first U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup.

In the tournament’s championship match, which will take place on Sunday at the same location, the Girls in Blue will play the winner of the second semi-final between England Women and Australia Women.

Team India’s ability to play with precision once again helped them defeat the Kiwis with ease. India restricted the white ferns to a relatively modest 107 for 9 in 20 overs after choosing to bowl first.

Parshavi Chopra was the pick of the bowlers, returning figures of 3 for 20 in four overs. The likes of Titas Sadhu (1/17), Mannat Kashyap (1/21), Shafali (1/7) and Archana Devi (1/20) picked up a wicket apiece.

Given their powerful batting lineup, India easily reached their target of 108. Even though the Girls in Blue lost their captain early, Shweta Sehrawat’s outstanding performance carried the team to victory.

The opening batswoman maintained her composure and used 10 boundaries to score an unbeaten 61 off 45 balls. She also contributed to the partnership with Soumya Tiwari (22), which helped New Zealand lose the match by 62 runs.
