Varadkar Sets Local and European Election Dates, No Clarity on General Election Yet

Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has announced that Ireland’s local and European elections will take place on June 7. Despite speculation, Varadkar remained non-committal on a general election during Thursday’s announcement. He assured reporters that a general election isn’t imminent, responding to queries during his visit to the US for St. Patrick’s Day festivities. The decision follows a recent public opinion poll defeat for the government, primarily concerning proposed changes to the constitutional definition of family and care. The government, advocating for change, faced opposition from the majority. The upcoming Limerick mayoral election will coincide with the June 7 polls. With the current coalition government’s tenure ending in February 2025, a general election must occur by March 2025, though an earlier vote is possible pending government decision.
