66 percent of retail and bar workers subjected to verbal abuse, survey reveals

Two-thirds of retail and bar employees in Ireland have been subjected to verbal abuse at work, according to a survey conducted among members of the Mandate trade union.

The survey of 1,200 workers found that 66% had experienced verbal abuse from customers or others while on duty. One in four respondents said they had been threatened with physical harm, while 11% reported being subjected to actual physical abuse at work.

The findings highlight the widespread nature of abuse faced by frontline retail and hospitality workers, raising serious concerns about workplace safety and staff wellbeing in these sectors.

The results come amid growing calls for stronger protections for retail and service industry employees, who frequently deal with difficult customer interactions. Many workers have reported increasing levels of aggression and threatening behaviour, particularly in the post-pandemic period.

The Mandate trade union has been advocating for enhanced safety measures and legal protections for workers in retail and hospitality settings. The union argues that employers must take greater responsibility for ensuring staff safety and that there should be stricter consequences for those who abuse or assault workers.

The issue of workplace violence and abuse has gained increased attention in recent years, with similar concerns raised by public transport workers, healthcare staff and other frontline employees who regularly interact with the public.

The survey results are expected to strengthen calls for legislative measures to protect workers from abuse and violence, as well as improved training and support systems for employees dealing with aggressive behaviour.
