Huge Unemployment to hit Ireland as All stores of Carphone Warehouse planned to shutdown

More than 80 Carphone Warehouse stores had been shutdown in the country which resulted in loss of 500 jobs. The website had been shutdown and they management had informed the staffs about the shutting down of stores with immediate effect.

A statement from the company blames the change in shopping habits of people and considers the move of the company as a very necassary step in their mobile transformation. People had started buying sim free handsets and as a result the footfalls fall way down to 40% the last year.

The decision was made mainly because of the stoppage of selling phones or plans by Vodafone and the discussions with Eir failed as the parent company had shut more than 530 stores in Britain. The Carphone Warehouse chain of stores opened its first Irish store in 1996 and merged with Dixons in 2014.

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar said that this decision may be disastrous for the employees and their families as they already faced many difficulties in the period of pandemic. The guaranteed the necessary assistance that the government could provide.
