Abbott to create 1,000 jobs in Ireland with €440m investment

Around 1,000 jobs are set to be created in Ireland as medical device company Abbott is planning to launch a new manufacturing facility producing diabetes technology in Kilkenny and expand the company’s site near Donegal town.

While the manufacturing facility will employ more than 800 people, the expansion of Abbott’s Donegal site will create a further 200 jobs.

These projects are part of Abbott’s €440 million investment in Ireland.

According to RTE, the 30,000 metre-square Kilkenny facility will have the highest production in the world of the company’s FreeStyle Libre sensors, which are among the world’s smallest to monitor glucose levels.

The facility is said to be fully electric with 600 solar panels on the roof, six air-to-water heat pumps, and tanks for collecting rainwater to use onsite.

Abbott, which has been in Ireland since 1946, employs around 6,000 people in the country.
