In a historic feat, Baby Pereppadan on Friday became the first Indian-origin mayor of South Dublin County Council in Ireland.
He was elected as the mayor after Fine Gael, Fianna Fail, Labour and Independents made up the ruling alliance in the council and supported his nomination.
This comes almost two weeks after Pereppadan was elected as a councillor for Fine Gael in the recently held council elections from Tallaght South electoral area.
Based in Tallaght for over 20 years, Pereppadan has been contesting elections since 2009. He was first elected to the council in 2019.
He moved to Ireland from Kerala in 2001 to join his wife Jincy, who was employed as a nurse in Tallaght Hospital.
Pereppadan’s son Britto also won the local council polls from Tallaght Central, making it a rare event when a father-son duo were elected to the same council.
