Belfast witnessed another night of violence on Monday as police officers came under sustained attack with petrol bombs, masonry and bricks thrown at them during several hours of rioting, said Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
A man in his 50s was taken to hospital after he was seriously attacked in the Donegall Road and Oban Street area, RTE reported.
His condition is said to be serious. Police are treating the incident as a hate crime, with witnesses reporting that the man was stamped on his head by his attackers.
The violence erupted last night in the same area where two businesses were attacked on Saturday following an anti-immigration protest.
In a statement, PSNI stated that a police Land Rover was also set alight by rioters after pouring petrol over it.
“Thankfully the occupants of the vehicle were not physically harmed and remained on duty,” it added.
Police said attempts to set ablaze a supermarket which had been targeted on Saturday night were also foiled by officers.
In retaliation, police officers deployed two plastic bullets and struck one rioter on the hand.
A 15-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of riotous behaviour.
Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Melanie Jones said her team was working at pace to identify offenders and make arrests.
