At the United Nations COP27 climate summit in Egypt, delegates came to a significant agreement about financial aid for less developed nations.
They have decided to create a fund to cover loss and damage already brought on by global warming after two weeks of discussions.
Negotiators have been working through the night to finalise the text.
After arduous talks over the plan for days, the fund was finally approved in the wee hours of this morning to cheers from the delegates.
Zambia’s Minister of Green Economy and Environment, said he was “very, very excited.”
Mr Collins Nzovu said: “It was a positive result from 1.3 billion Africans.”
He said: “It’s very exciting because for us, success in Egypt was going to be based on what we get from loss and damage.”
In order to achieve the aspirational goal of keeping global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius over pre-industrial levels, the plenary still needs to accept a number of resolutions and the final COP27 statement, which addresses a number of other sensitive topics.
