Covid Cases Surge by 60% in Ireland Due to JN.1 Variant

Ireland has experienced a significant 60% increase in Covid-19 cases over the past week, according to the Health Protection Surveillance Center (HSPC). From June 16 to 22, there were 1,042 Covid patients in the country, marking an increase of 650 cases from the previous week. Tragically, three Covid-related deaths were also reported.

Officials describe the current Covid infection level as ‘moderate to high.’ Hospitalizations have risen by 56%, with 486 people admitted last week due to the virus. However, the number of patients requiring ICU treatment remains very low.

The primary cause of this surge is the JN.1 variant, with the KP.3 variant also contributing to the spread.

Health authorities advise anyone with symptoms to stay at home for at least 48 hours and only go out if symptoms have completely resolved. If symptoms persist, it is recommended to get tested for Covid-19.

These measures are crucial to help control the outbreak and protect public health.
