Criminal barristers in Ireland protest for second time this month over pay dispute

Criminal barristers have withdrawn their services across the country for a second time this month as part of the Bar of Ireland’s campaign for fee restoration.

Protests were held at the Criminal Courts of Justice in Dublin, and courthouses in Cork, Limerick, Galway and Castlebar.

Hundreds of members of the Bar of Ireland are demanding a reversal of pay cuts imposed on them in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis.

Barristers had withdrawn their services last October, which led to a restoration of 10 per cent of fees in the budget. However, according to the barristers, the rise did not fully restore the cuts imposed since 2008, and the breaking of the link to public sector pay agreements has yet to be restored.

According to the Council of The Bar of Ireland, its members were frustrated at the lack of engagement from the government on the matter.

Barristers are also planning to stage another day of protests on July 24, which could further lead to hundreds of trials being adjourned.
