Deliveroo launches world-first drone delivery service in Dublin

Deliveroo has launched drone deliveries in Dublin, marking the first time the global food delivery platform has offered aerial delivery service to customers anywhere in the world.

The pioneering service begins with a test phase in Blanchardstown, where customers within a 3-kilometer radius can now order from local restaurants and receive their meals delivered by drone in as little as three minutes.

The drone delivery system is powered by Manna, an Irish drone delivery company, and represents a significant technological leap for food delivery services. Orders from participating restaurants will be flown directly to customers at speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour, dramatically reducing traditional delivery times.

Participating restaurants in the initial launch include popular chains Musashi, WOW Burger, Boojum, and Elephant & Castle, offering customers a diverse range of dining options through the new aerial delivery method.

The delivery process is designed to be completely contactless. Upon arrival at the destination, the drone hovers above the delivery location and lowers the food to the ground using a secure, biodegradable tether system, ensuring both safety and environmental responsibility.

Carlo Mocci, Chief Business Officer at Deliveroo, emphasized the company’s commitment to expanding access to local restaurants. “Our mission is to bring local neighbourhood favourites to as many people’s doors as possible,” he said.

“We’re excited to explore how drones can help us reach new customers, complementing our existing rider model and if successful, the prospect of expanding drone deliveries across Ireland and into other markets,” Mocci added.

The service is particularly focused on serving suburban and harder-to-reach locations that may be challenging for traditional delivery methods. Deliveroo plans to use the initial weeks of operation to assess how effectively drones can serve these areas and improve overall delivery coverage.

Customers eligible for drone delivery must first validate their address through the Deliveroo app, which then confirms a suitable pin location for safe delivery. Typical drop-off locations include driveways, front gardens, or back gardens where the drone can safely complete the delivery process.

Once an order is placed, customers can track their delivery through the usual app interface and will receive notifications when the drone is approaching their location, allowing them to prepare to receive their order.

The company has ambitious expansion plans beyond restaurant delivery. Within the next six months, Deliveroo intends to launch grocery and retail deliveries via drone, potentially revolutionizing how customers receive everyday essentials.

According to The BreakingNews, The launch represents a significant technological advancement in Ireland’s delivery sector and positions Dublin as a testing ground for next-generation logistics solutions. If successful, the drone delivery model could be expanded across Ireland and into Deliveroo’s other international markets.

The partnership with Manna, which operates from a local delivery hub in the area, demonstrates how Irish technology companies are contributing to global innovations in delivery services. The biodegradable tether system used in the delivery process also reflects growing emphasis on environmentally sustainable business practices.

This world-first launch for Deliveroo could signal the beginning of a broader transformation in how food and goods are delivered in urban and suburban areas, potentially complementing rather than replacing traditional delivery methods.
