Dodgy box crackdown: Authorities to monitor Irish social media for illegal streaming activity

Authorities in Ireland are stepping up efforts to crack down on the use of illegal streaming devices, commonly known as “dodgy boxes”, by monitoring social media channels.

This initiative is being led by the Federation Against Copyright Theft (Fact) in collaboration with Crimestoppers, an independent crime-detection organization.

Recent reports indicate that more than one in five people in Ireland are using dodgy boxes, often activated through legitimate devices like Amazon Fire Sticks. Using a dodgy box at home is illegal under Irish law and can result in fines and criminal prosecution.

As part of the new campaign, the public will be encouraged to share any information they have about illegal streaming activities within their communities. This includes details on individuals or groups involved in advertising, selling, or distributing illegal streaming subscriptions and modified devices.

A spokesperson for Fact explained that the campaign’s goal is to gather intelligence on those profiting from these illegal activities. By monitoring social media and encouraging community reporting, authorities hope to identify and prosecute those involved in the illegal streaming market.
