DUBLIN : Dublin City may see further restrictions on non-public vehicles in its downtown area as a new draft transport plan aims to create a pedestrian and eco-friendly urban environment. Proposed as part of the 2022-2028 objectives outlined in the Dublin City Development Plan, the draft proposal envisions car bans in several city zones.
Parliament Street is among the areas where car traffic could be prohibited, with diversions for vehicles from College Green and Deme Street away from George Street. Bachelor’s Walk and Aston Quay could undergo redevelopment to cater exclusively to public transport, pedestrians, and cyclists.
Westland Row might allow only public transport and cyclists to turn onto Pearce Street, with a new right turn for public traffic introduced at this junction. Pearce Street, Tara Street, Beresford Place, and Gardiner Street are also candidates for rezoning.
The Dublin City Center Transport Plan 2023, developed by Dublin City Council in collaboration with the National Transport Authority (NTA), envisions a more pedestrian-centric city center, with priority given to pedestrians, buses, luas, and bicycles. If implemented, this plan could transform Dublin’s city center into a more sustainable and people-friendly environment.
