Dublin’s city centre will see additional traffic restrictions implemented by summer as part of the ongoing Dublin City Transport Plan, according to a new report from Dublin City Council.

Parliament Street, which faces City Hall, is set to become entirely traffic-free this summer, following a layout similar to temporary pedestrianization measures implemented during previous summer seasons. The change will include a new two-way cycling provision with a link across Grattan Bridge connecting to the already traffic-free Capel Street.
Meanwhile, Westland Row will undergo significant changes during a 10-week construction period, after which private vehicles will no longer be permitted to turn left onto the street. This restriction will reserve left turns exclusively for public transport and cyclists. To compensate, a new right turn will be created from Westland Row onto Pearse Street in the direction of Ringsend.
The Traffic Department’s Quarter 1 Report for 2025 highlights “substantial and sustained” reductions in traffic volumes along the quays since the initial implementation of the Dublin City Transport Plan in August 2024. Despite the new restrictions, the report assures that “all of Westland Row and Pearse Street will still be accessible by all modes with a different approach route being required for some areas.”
These latest developments represent a continuation of Dublin City Council’s efforts to reduce private car dependency in the city center while prioritizing pedestrian spaces and sustainable transport options. The report is scheduled for discussion at tonight’s council meeting.
