Dublin commuters to receive ‘I’m Sound’ badges for safe and considerate road behaviour

Dublin City Council has launched an innovative campaign rewarding commuters with special badges for demonstrating “sound” behaviour, targeting cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers who prioritize safety and consideration for others.

The “Be Sound This Summer” initiative features roving “Soundness Detectors” who will patrol the city identifying and rewarding positive road user behaviour with distinctive “I’m Sound” badges that recipients can wear with pride.

The campaign combines practical recognition with entertainment through social media videos featuring cautionary characters including the Lane Hog, the Dangerous Dasher, and the Light Breaker, designed to highlight problematic behaviours while promoting safer alternatives.

Lord Mayor Ray McAdam emphasized the campaign’s focus on community responsibility and mutual respect among road users. “As a city, we’re working to make travel safer, cleaner, and more connected — not just through infrastructure, but through how we treat one another,” he stated.

McAdam explained that the initiative recognizes “small, everyday actions that make our streets safer and more respectful for everyone,” while using humor and positivity to encourage better road behaviour across all transport modes.

Campaign activations began Wednesday morning across various city locations, with the council hoping to foster a culture where considerate behaviour becomes the norm rather than the exception. The approach represents Dublin’s effort to address road safety through positive reinforcement rather than purely punitive measures.
