Dublin City Council has announced that Parliament Street in the city centre will become traffic-free from Friday, July 4th, transforming one of the capital’s busiest pedestrian thoroughfares into a dedicated walking and cycling space.

The council will mark the transition with a celebratory market on July 4th, followed by weekend events throughout July beginning on July 5th. The initiative recognizes the street’s current status as a predominantly pedestrian area, with up to 23,000 people passing through daily.
The permanent reallocation aims to enhance pedestrian and cycling infrastructure while introducing green spaces and public seating. Dublin City Council emphasized that the changes will create an improved north-south route between City Hall and Bolton Street, connecting with Capel Street and linking the eastern and western sections of Temple Bar.
Public support for the initiative proved overwhelming, with 90 percent of respondents in a May 2025 consultation favoring enhanced public space and two-way cycling provision. The strong backing reflects growing demand for pedestrian-friendly city centre spaces.
Construction of interim improvements including seating, planting and new surfacing will begin on July 7th and continue throughout the summer months. The phased approach will minimize disruption while delivering immediate benefits to users.
The traffic reconfiguration involves several key changes across different sections of Parliament Street. The stretch between Essex Quay and Essex Gate will become permanently traffic-free, restricted to pedestrians and cyclists only, with road levels raised to match existing kerb height.
Current west-to-east traffic flow between Essex Gate and Essex Street East will remain open to all vehicles at all times. The section between Essex Gate and Lord Edward Street will restrict vehicle access except for deliveries permitted between 6am and 11am daily.
Two-way cycling will be introduced throughout Parliament Street as part of broader cycling infrastructure improvements. A new two-way cycling link will be established on the eastern side of Grattan Bridge, with traffic lanes reduced to a single right-turn lane.
Additional cycling infrastructure includes a two-way link on the eastern side of Capel Street between the quays and Strand Street Little. Northbound cycling will also be permitted on Capel Street, creating a complete two-way cycling connection between Dame Street and Bolton Street.
The Parliament Street transformation represents part of Dublin City Council’s broader strategy to prioritize sustainable transport and enhance public spaces in the city centre, following successful pedestrianization projects elsewhere in Dublin.
