Safety message emphasizes dangers of overhead wires as festive season begins

ESB Networks has urged the public not to hang Christmas lights from electricity poles, warning that overhead wires are live and extremely dangerous.
In a safety message for the festive season, the utility company emphasized that people should never take risks when it comes to electricity, as the power can jump gaps even without direct contact.
The ESB warned that storms and strong winds can damage electricity wires and poles, bringing wires to the ground where they remain live and dangerous. The public should maintain safe distances and stay alert for fallen wires, which must never be approached.
Any damage to electricity infrastructure should be reported immediately to ESB Networks by calling the emergency number 1800 372 999, which operates 24 hours daily, seven days per week.
The ESB also issued safety tips for Christmas decorations inside homes:
Indoor Safety Guidelines:
- Always check decorations for frayed wires, loose connections, damaged or cracked plugs, or discoloration. Disconnect immediately and replace if any issues are found. Disconnect remotely at the distribution board for maximum safety.
- Keep decorations and combustible materials well away from light fittings and heat sources including heaters, fireplaces, and candles to reduce fire risk.
- Switch off all electrical appliances, including Christmas lights and phone chargers, before going to bed and when leaving the house.
- Completely unwind extension leads to avoid overheating and don’t overload sockets with adaptors or extension blocks.
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they’re working properly.
The warnings come as households across Ireland prepare for Christmas celebrations, with many installing outdoor lighting displays and increasing electrical usage through decorations and appliances.
Electrical safety becomes particularly important during winter when homes use more heating, lighting operates for longer periods, and Christmas decorations add additional electrical loads to household systems.
The ESB’s emphasis on never using utility poles for decorations addresses a practice that, while perhaps seeming convenient, creates serious electrocution risks both for those hanging lights and subsequently for utility workers who must service the infrastructure.
With Ireland experiencing recent periods of strong winds and unsettled weather, the risk of storm damage to electrical infrastructure remains elevated, making public awareness of fallen wire dangers particularly important.
The safety campaign reflects ESB Networks’ responsibility for public safety around electrical infrastructure while allowing people to enjoy festive celebrations safely.
