Extreme cold and freezing temperatures: Yellow warnings issued across Ireland as travel conditions deteriorate

Met Éireann has issued weather warnings across multiple counties in Ireland due to severe cold and the risk of freezing temperatures. Forecasters predict temperatures will plummet to between minus 2 and minus 4 degrees Celsius, creating hazardous conditions for travelers and residents.

A Yellow Low Temperature/Ice warning is in effect for Munster, Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford, and Wicklow from 6pm today (Saturday) through 11am tomorrow (Sunday). The warning alerts residents to expect icy conditions on roads, footpaths, and other surfaces, significantly increasing the risk of accidents and falls.

A separate Yellow Snow-Ice warning has been issued for Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Connacht, and Louth covering the same period from 6pm Saturday to 11am Sunday. These areas face the additional threat of snow accumulation combined with icy conditions, making travel particularly treacherous.

In Northern Ireland, the UK Met Office has forecast temperatures dropping to at least minus 3 degrees Celsius on Saturday night. A Yellow warning is also in place there for Saturday night, with authorities urging caution. The severe weather has already disrupted sporting events, with several Northern Ireland Football League matches cancelled due to unsafe pitch and travel conditions.

Authorities are advising the public to exercise extreme caution when traveling during the warning period. Motorists should allow extra time for journeys, reduce speed, and maintain greater distances between vehicles. Pedestrians should be alert for icy patches on footpaths and roads. Those who can avoid travel during the most severe conditions are encouraged to stay home until temperatures moderate and ice melts.

The cold snap represents a significant weather event for Ireland, with widespread impacts expected across transport networks, outdoor activities, and daily routines. Residents should ensure adequate heating, check on vulnerable neighbors, and take precautions to prevent frozen pipes during this period of extreme cold.
