Financial support planned for households in electricity arrears, says Simon Harris

Financial assistance is set to be rolled out for households struggling with unpaid electricity bills, Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris has said.

Speaking in Cork, Harris confirmed that the Government is preparing targeted measures to support those most affected, as around 320,000 people are currently in arrears on their electricity accounts.

Fuel allowance extension

Harris said a decision has been taken to extend the Fuel Allowance scheme, aimed at easing the energy burden on low- and middle-income households.

The move is expected to benefit approximately 50,000 additional families, providing direct support during a period of high energy costs.

Targeted support

The Deputy Prime Minister said the Government’s approach is focused on directing assistance “where it is needed most,” particularly for households facing sustained financial pressure due to rising living costs.

Energy arrears have risen significantly over the past year, prompting calls for expanded supports and stronger protections for vulnerable consumers.

Further details of the assistance package are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
