Former Dublin mayor Hazel Chu elected deputy leader of the Green Party

Former Dublin mayor Hazel Chu has been elected deputy leader of the Green Party, following an internal party vote.

The position became vacant after the resignation of Róisín Garvey last October. Garvey is understood to have stepped away from the role and the party earlier.

Voting for the deputy leadership opened on Monday and concluded this afternoon. The contest was between Chu, who serves as a Dublin City councillor and previously held the role of Lord Mayor, and Marianne Butler, a councillor from Louth.

Chu’s election places her in a key leadership role within the Green Party, as the party looks to strengthen its organisation and direction following recent internal changes.

Party members are expected to formally ratify the result, after which Chu will begin her term as deputy leader.
