Free Textbook Scheme Extended to Leaving Cert Students in Upcoming Budget

DUBLIN: The government will extend the free textbook distribution program to Leaving Cert students as part of a new initiative to reduce education costs. Deputy Prime Minister Micheál Martin announced the expansion in the Dáil, with Prime Minister Simon Harris confirming that the official announcement will come in the October budget.

Prime Minister Harris highlighted the government’s commitment to lowering education expenses, including providing free school books, expanding the hot school meals program, reducing college fees, and extending parental leave.

He emphasized the need for further action, noting that too many children in Ireland still live in poverty. In response, Deputy Prime Minister Martin announced a €10 monthly increase in child benefit payments.

Additionally, the budget will include measures to support small businesses and the farming community, recognizing their vital role in the country’s development. Prime Minister Harris acknowledged the ongoing issue of high living costs and promised related announcements in the October budget.

Finance Minister Michael McGrath has confirmed that the upcoming budget will feature a substantial tax package aimed at alleviating financial pressures on families and businesses.
