Wildfire in Greece continue to pose threat as many areas including Skopelos and neighbouring islands still blaze with fire. Many natives and tourists are being evacuated on ferries and fishing boats from the northern outskirts of Athens. So far two people have been killed including a firefighter.
As of now firefighters are battling 15 wildfires across the country. Most of them are in the north areas of Athens and unpredictable winds make it spread to other areas. The nearby islands Evia and areas close to ancient Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games are also raged by fire, reports the BBC.
“Wildfires of unprecedented intensity and spread, all our forces are fighting the battle day and night to save lives, together with volunteers.” said government minister Nikos Hardalias.
After heavy flood in Germany and Belgium, now Greece is facing the extreme weather changes after a week long heat wave sparkled wildfires in many parts of the country. The temperature was above 40 degree Celsius in the country the whole week. Hundreds of firefighters and nearly 20 water-bombing aircrafts are trying to control the blazes across the country. The countries including France and the US are sending extra aircrfats to Greece.
The neighbouring Turkey is also battling intense wildfires where eight people have been killed. The fire is most affected at the southern coast of the country.
