Health minister creates ‘Bubble of Peace’ for pregnancy services

Ireland’s Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, has announced a big change to protect people seeking pregnancy-related healthcare. Starting today, there are new “Safe Access Zones” around places that offer pregnancy services, including abortion.

These zones stretch 100 meters from the entrances and exits of places like doctor’s offices, family planning clinics, and hospitals. Within these areas, it’s now against the law to bother or try to change the mind of anyone going in for services.

“This law is about supporting and protecting people who need these services,” Minister Donnelly explained. “Now, patients can get the care they need without feeling scared or pressured.”

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The zones are meant to give patients privacy and security.
  • Police will first warn anyone breaking the rules.
  • People who keep causing trouble after a warning could face fines or even jail time.
  • The law still allows for protests near government buildings and doesn’t affect what happens inside churches.

This new rule has been in the works for a while. The government promised to make these changes to help people access services safely and privately.

Minister Donnelly seemed happy about the new law, saying, “I’m very pleased we’ve reached this point in giving people the protection they deserve when they need it most.”

For anyone seeking pregnancy-related healthcare, including abortions, this means a calmer, safer trip to the doctor from now on.
