The government of India on Thursday launched DigiYatra, which depends on a facial recognition system to let passengers enter airports, has been introduced by the Indian government on Thursday.
Digi Yatra is designed to use facial recognition technology (FRT) to achieve contactless and seamless passenger processing at airports.
The project’s main idea is that travellers will be able to pass through various checkpoints at airports using paperless and contactless processing, establishing their identity by using facial features, which could be connected to their boarding pass.
It will be introduced in seven airports during the initial phase, but only for travellers taking domestic flights.
It will be introduced at three airports today—Delhi, Bengaluru, and Varanasi—and will then expand to four airports by March 2023—Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, and Vijayawada. The technology would then be used throughout the nation.
A one-time registration on the Digi Yatra app using Aadhaar-based validation and a self-image capture is necessary in order to use this facility.
There is no central storage of Personally Identifiable Information (PII). A secure wallet is installed on the traveler’s smartphone, where they keep their ID and other identification documents.
