Indian researcher in Ireland Jincy Jerry has won the prestigious Innovation Awards of Excellence at The International Conference on Prevention and Infection Control (ICPIC) in Geneva. The conference is conducted once in every two years and is organized by the World Health Organization (WHO). Participants from more than 100 countries attended ICPIC every year.
ICPIC and its Innovation Awards of Excellence is considered to be one of the top awards in the medical field and it’s an outstanding achievement for Jincy Jerry, who is the Assistant Director of Nursing in Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin. She is also the Research & Development Lead for Infection Prevention Control Ireland and Member of Professional Development Committee for Healthcare Infection Society, UK.
Jincy Jerry had actively involved in the strategic management of COVID-19 and other infectious diseases in the hospital and community services. She was awarded the ‘Hospital Manager of the Year 2020’ by Irish Healthcare Awards due to her outstanding leadership and inspirational vision for innovation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Jincy is a pioneer in the use of Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical settings within Irish Healthcare. She has implemented RPA for rapid analysis and interpretation of Microbiology results, including COVID-19 for Infection Prevention & Control Nurses. This innovation has improved the efficiency of Infection Prevention & Control Nurses (IPC), through the automation of their repetitive administrative workload.
Currently, the software robot downloads the lab results, completes the surveillance data and send IPC nurse referral and create patient specific notes on electronic patient record system.
There were five finalists including Jincy and the others were from the US, Hungary and Denmark. With an 8-minute slide presentation and 5-minute question and answer period by each of them on their project at the Innovation Academy Awards session, the eight-member jury subsequently announced Jincy Jerry as the winner.
Jincy’s husband Jerry is an IT engineer in Ireland and they have three children. She hails from Kerala, the southern state of India.
