Intel to cut nearly 200 jobs at Kildare manufacturing plant

Intel is set to eliminate up to 195 positions at its chip manufacturing facility in Leixlip, County Kildare, as part of the global technology giant’s broader workforce reduction strategy.

The company has submitted a collective redundancy notification to the Department of Enterprise, informing the government that the affected staff could face compulsory redundancy. The cuts represent approximately 4% of the 4,900 people currently employed at the Leixlip plant.

The announcement follows Intel’s global restructuring plans revealed in April, when the company indicated it would reduce its worldwide workforce by over 20%. At that time, Intel employed approximately 109,000 people globally, with speculation that up to 1,000 Irish jobs could be at risk.

Intel’s CEO announced the employment reductions alongside a tighter return-to-work policy following the publication of the firm’s quarterly earnings report earlier this year. The company had previously confirmed that specific job impact numbers would be made public in July.

The Leixlip facility is one of Intel’s key international manufacturing sites, making the job cuts significant for both the local economy and Ireland’s technology sector.

Kildare North TD Aidan Farrelly called for immediate action to support affected workers, demanding a comprehensive support package from both Intel and the state.

“We must see a full suite of supports provided by Intel and the State – those affected need to be made aware of their rights, entitlements, and any offers of up-skilling or access to further education,” the Social Democrats TD said.

Farrelly urged Enterprise Minister Peter Burke to ensure support services are available immediately, reiterating calls he made in April when potential redundancies first emerged. He emphasized that affected employees should receive clear information about retraining opportunities and access to further education programs.
