In a move to strengthen Ireland’s global presence, the government has announced a significant increase in foreign aid spending for 2025. Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Micheál Martin, revealed that the Irish Aid budget will rise to €810 million, marking a 4.5% increase from the previous year.
This boost in funding will support various international initiatives, including humanitarian assistance to crisis-affected areas like Sudan, Gaza, and Ukraine. The budget will also focus on long-term development projects, such as improving crop yields, supporting women and girls, and promoting education.
A key highlight of the budget is Ireland’s commitment to international climate finance. The country is on track to provide at least €225 million by 2025, demonstrating its dedication to addressing global environmental challenges.
Beyond aid, the budget allocates funds for expanding Ireland’s diplomatic network. Plans include opening new embassies and consulates, as well as strengthening existing missions around the world.
Minister Martin emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, “As a small country, it is vital for our continued prosperity to build Ireland’s influence and impact around the world.”
The government also assured citizens that the budget would support improvements in passport and consular services, ensuring efficient assistance for Irish nationals abroad.
With this increased budget, Ireland aims to reinforce its reputation as a compassionate global player while also securing its own interests on the international stage.
