Met Eireann announced on Tuesday that tonight could offer stargazers in Ireland “some opportunity” to witness the Perseid meteor shower and, potentially, the aurora borealis.
The Irish meteorological service reported that conditions will be optimal in the eastern part of the country, with clear skies forecast.
The Perseid meteor shower, known for its swift and bright meteors, peaks annually in mid-August, and clear conditions will enhance the visibility of these shooting stars as they streak across the night sky.
In addition to the meteor shower, there is a possibility of seeing the aurora borealis, or northern lights, making an appearance.
Although auroras are less common in Ireland compared to higher latitudes, recent geomagnetic activity has increased the chances of this spectacular light display being visible in the region. The phenomenon, which occurs when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere around the magnetic poles, was last observed in Ireland in May.
Residents and visitors in Dublin, Wicklow, and surrounding counties are especially likely to benefit from the favorable weather conditions.
