Ireland is planning to introduce a reduced speed limit of 60 kilometre per hour on local roads by November, RTE reported citing the Minister of State at the Department of Transport.
The move is aimed at addressing a spike in accidents and fatalities on Irish roads. A total of 105 people have lost their lives so far this year, an increase of 14 on the same time last year.
Last year the government had announced plans to reduce the speed limits on many roads, including lowering the limit on local roads from 80km/h to 60km/h.
As per the plan, the speed limit will be capped at 80km/h on national secondary roads as opposed to the current limit of 100km/h.
Additionally, there would be a limit of 30km/h within towns, cities and residential areas, while roads on the fringes of urban areas could be capped at 50km/h.
