In a groundbreaking move, Ireland’s 2026 Leaving Cert English syllabus will include two recently released movies, “The Banshees of Inisherin” and the unexpected addition of “Barbie.” Alongside these, iconic films like “The Shawshank Redemption” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” will be part of the curriculum.
Addressing concerns about the inclusion of “Barbie,” DCU School of English Assistant Professor Dr. Ellen Howley defended the decision, emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives in film. Dr. Howley highlighted the opportunity for students to conduct a comparative study, analyzing how “Barbie” and classics like “Pride and Prejudice” approach the topic of feminism.
Directed by Greta Gerwig, “Barbie” raked in €9 million at the Irish box office last year, contributing to its cultural impact. The syllabus aims to offer students a broad understanding of cinema, encouraging critical thinking and analysis.
