Ireland’s paralympic heroes return home with medal haul

Team Ireland is set to receive a hero’s welcome as they return home today after a triumphant performance at the 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris. The 35-strong team will touch down at Dublin Airport around 2:30 PM, greeted by cheering friends, family, and fans.

The Irish Paralympians are bringing back an impressive collection of six medals – one gold, three silver, and two bronze. Stars like Katie-George Dunlevy, Linda Kelly, Eve McCrystal, Róisín Ní Riain, and Orla Comerford led the charge, securing podium finishes in their events.

Minister for Sport Catherine Martin praised the athletes, saying, “These athletes have inspired the next generation of Paralympians and they are a credit to their families, coaches and communities.” She also promised continued government investment in sports, from grassroots to elite levels.

The team’s success wasn’t limited to medal-winning performances. With over 20 top-8 finishes and six fourth-place results, Team Ireland showcased depth and talent across nine different sports. Notably, more than 40% of the team were first-time Paralympians, highlighting a bright future for Irish para-sports.

Minister of State for Sport and Physical Education Thomas Byrne, who attended the Games, remarked on the electric atmosphere and vocal support for the Irish athletes. He emphasized that their achievements will be remembered for years to come.

According to The Journal, as Ireland welcomes home its Paralympic heroes, the nation celebrates not just the medals, but the dedication, perseverance, and inspiring performances of all 35 athletes who proudly represented their country on the world stage.
