Penalty heartbreak for Spain as Morocco advances to World Cup quarter-final

Morocco dumped Spain out of the World Cup with a 3-0 penalty shoot-out win after 120 minutes of a goalless last-16 tie.

Achraf Hakimi, a Moroccan player born in Spain, scored the winning penalty after Spain missed all three of their attempts.

Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bono was the hero as he saved from Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets while Pablo Sarabia hit the post with Spain’s first effort.

In celebration of reaching the quarterfinals for the first time in their history, Morocco threw goalkeeper Bono into the air and the entire team danced and applauded their jubilant fans.

Walid Regragui took over as Morocco manager only in August. He is the first African manager to lead a country to the quarter-final of a World Cup.
