Ireland’s Wind Power Surges to 41%, Slashes Electricity Prices

Wind energy powers 41% of Ireland’s electricity in February, up 4% from last year, says Wind Energy Ireland. This eco-friendly source generated 38% of total electricity in the first two months of 2024, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and cutting carbon emissions, notes CEO Noel Cunniffe. Last year’s record wind energy production helped control electricity bills amidst rising fossil fuel prices. The nation used 3,439 gigawatt hours in February, with 1,414 GW from wind. Notably, wholesale electricity prices in Ireland are falling, averaging €84.61/MWh in February 2024, down from €159.19/MWh in February 2023. This shift to sustainable energy bodes well for both the environment and consumer pockets.
