Irish govt issues new guidelines restricting use of free AI tools for public service

The Irish government has released new guidelines outlining the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) within the public service, advising against the use of free generative AI (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT and DeepSeek.

The framework warns that while these tools are widely accessible, they present significant risks due to a lack of oversight and data protection.

“Any information given to a public GenAI tool could be used in training the model,” the guidelines caution, urging public service bodies to avoid them entirely.

The new policy emphasises the need for safeguards, human oversight, and transparency when deploying AI.

It also calls for strict data protection measures and clear communication with end-users about when AI is in use.
