Irish grocery price inflation sees slight increase; Tesco holds highest market share

Grocery price inflation has seen a slight increase this month, with new figures from market research firm Kantar revealing that Irish consumers are spending more on items like alcohol, crisps, and sweets.

This uptick comes as people enjoy a variety of major sporting events.

Over the 12 weeks leading up to August 4, grocery prices rose by 2.8 per cent compared to the previous year, up from 2.6 per cent in July and surpassing the overall annual inflation rate of 2.2 per cent.

According to Emer Healy, Kantar’s business development director, good weather as well as the various sporting occasions such as the Olympics and the All-Ireland finals led to an additional €8m being spent on alcohol and an extra €5m being spent on take-home confectionery and savouries combined.

As per the report, Tesco had the biggest share of the Irish grocery market in the period. It had a 23.3 per cent of the market in the 12 week period as compared to Dunnes’ 23.2 per cent share.

While Supervalu had 20.2 per cent of the market, Aldi and Lidl had 12.6 per cent and 13.8 per cent share, respectively.
