The Irish government is considering an energy credit of up to €250 in the upcoming budget 2025 to help alleviate the cost of living for households, RTE reported.
The development comes a day after the Tanaiste, Micheal Martin, said the energy credit will be paid to households before the end of the year.
However, no final decision has been made regarding the exact amount or whether the payment will be issued in one or two instalments.
As discussions around the budget intensify, it has become evident that the government’s expenditure on one-off measures will be lower than the previous year. This reflects the improving economic conditions as inflation continues to ease.
Last year, the government allocated over €2 billion towards measures aimed at assisting people with the rising cost of living. However, spending this year is expected to be reduced, falling within a range of €1 billion to €2 billion.
The framework for the upcoming budget was broadly agreed upon by party leaders and the Ministers for Finance and Public Expenditure during a meeting last night.
